Superb instrument from Africa, Doble Gonga - Bamileke - Cameroon XIX Century.
Iron and braided raffia. The sounds of iron are sometimes equated with voices of ancestral kingdoms, were used in rituals by diviners, and are used on occasions marking social transitions such as the initiation of young people, marriage and funerals. This double gong, in its simplicity, was most likely a sacred instrument of the Bamileke people of Cameroon. The beating of wooden sticks on hollow metal heralded the beginning of ceremonies; communication with the supernatural, ancestors and deities.
