The title "Pinghu" comes from Mao Zedong's poem "Pinghu. The poem imagines a scene of water filling behind the walls of the Three Gorges Dam, now known as one of the largest civil engineering projects in history. Liu Hua photographed the areas near Chongqing and along the Yangtze River that were affected by the dam's construction, and questioned the extent of the sacrifices people made to build the dam.
