Yves Laloy was born in Rennes, France in 1920, into a family of architects. He studied architecture at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris before turning to painting in 1950. Laloy’s works were exhibited in Parisian galleries with a Surrealist background, and in 1952, he held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie d'Orsel in Paris. Laloy, a well-traveled artist, exhibited in Canada, Milan, Basel, and Budapest. Laloy's art is characterized by sculptural geometric effects, bold colors, imaginative shapes, and the great influence of Navajo culture. His figurative paintings borrow themes and motifs from Surrealism. The sea is a constant element in his art; it frequently appears in his works as either water itself or through fantastical sea creature-like beings. Laloy's oeuvre includes both humor and playful depictions of external sexual characteristics. Laloy died in 1999 in Cancale, Brittany, and a notable exhibition of his works was organized by the Musée des Beaux-Arts in his hometown of Rennes in 2004.
