An armillary sphere is a celestial sphere fitted with metal rings representing the main circles of the sky. The armillary sphere was invented by Eratosthenes in 255 B.C. The name comes from the Latin, armilla, meaning bracelet. Usually the earth, but later the sun, is placed in the centre of metal circles.
