Blue white porcelain diana cargo shipwreck – China – 1817

Antique Chinese Blue White Porcelain Diana Cargo Shipwreck Starburst Dish. In March 1995 I bought a few decorative antique Chinese blue and white porcelain chargers or presentation dishes on the Christies auction in Amsterdam. Salvaged from the Diana cargo shipwreck and dating to 1817 at Christie's auction in Amsterdam. Profusely decorated in vibrant blue on a white ground with a central stylised chrysanthemum flower, surrounded by abstract conch designs. The reverse of the dish with stylised flower stems. The Diana was licensed by the English East India Company to sail from Calcutta or Madras to Canton. The ship would then return to India from China, laden with silks, tea, preserved fruits and thousands of pieces of beautiful blue and white porcelain. At around 10:30 on the 4th March 1817, the ship was on course for Madras when it met with disaster, hitting some rocks off the straits of Malacca and sinking. The wreck was identified and recovered in 1994 by Dorian Ball of Malaysian Historical Salvors. In March 1995 Christie's auctioned the porcelain cargo in Amsterdam. Diameter: 10 3/4 inches = 27centimeter. Condition: Good. Intact and unrestored. With original Christie's sticker. Provenance: Ex. Diana cargo, discovered in 1994.
