Ibanez Maxxas MX2 - Japan - 1987

The Maxxas is one of the earlier attempts of Ibanez to introduce newer design concepts, like the special streamlined shape, the ‘all access neck joint’, the DiMarzio IBZ/USA pickups specially designed for this guitar and the (certainly for that time) extremely thin neck and Gotoh locking tuners. What is also special about this design, is that small sound chambers would be cut out in the body. The marketing department considered this design to be a possible risk to the brand - because of the fairly radical ideas that were incorporated - which caused them to decide that the guitar was to be released in a sub brand: "Maxxas a division of Ibanez". Ibanez wanted to affiliate themselves with the well-known rock guitarist Steve Vai at that time, so the first prototype was offered to him. Unfortunately, the sound chambers caused unprecedented feedback on stage, so a fully solid body version was made by his request. The Maxxas eventually ensured that Steve Vai signed with Ibanez and later designed the Jem-line with them. The manufacturer, FujiGen in Japan, initially did not have the machines to cut out the sound chambers inside the body of the Maxxas, so the first production version (the MX2) had a fully solid body. Later versions did have the sound chambers. The MX2 was only produced for a year so it is the only Maxxas version with a solid body. The guitar is very light with a thin neck (a precursor of the well-known Wizard neck by Ibanez) from one piece of maple, a nice and low string height and a rosewood fretboard. The two DiMarzio IBZ/USA humbuckers sound great, clean as well as with overdrive - the guitar switches effortlessly between bright and warm. Ibanez Maxxas MX2 from 1987 Serial number: F717762 Fully original, no parts replaced. Manufacturer: FujiGen, Japan Colour: 'Ruby Red' Body: solid, Honduran mahogany Neck: from one piece of maple, bolt-on ('all-access-neck-joint'). Tuning mechanism: Gotoh locking tuners Nut: Top-Lok III Bridge: Floyd Rose Edge-tremolo Pickups: DiMarzio IBZ/USA humbuckers The guitar has just been newly adjusted and checked.
