Very beautiful, detailed, handmade model of Tongkonan or Toraja house. Made on Sulawesi, Indonesia. House models like this one are mainly made by men from the Kesu and Tikala districts. Additionally, the valuables of the family are stored in the tongkonan. It is the centre for all great rituals. Similar to many important houses in Indonesia and Oceania, the tongkonan is also a cosmic symbol; the roof is often compared to heaven. The most important tongkonan have a a'riri posi, a style of stone or wood, which presumably portrays the symbolic umbilical cord which connects the house to the earth. The main motifs are the buffalo or water buffalo head, which provides protection. The entire piece is 49 cm high. Widest point: 44 cm (roof). Deepest point: 20 cm. Weight: over 1 kg.
