Kifwebe masks are among the great classics of Congo art, because of their originality, power and modernity.
They are worn during night and very feared rites in order to maintain social order.
This one is a male mask because it is surmounted by a large ridge.
Given its size, it should belong to a great insider.
Choice of colors is symbolic: red for life, black for death and white for the spirit world. 3 essential dimensions in humans live.
Eyes are tubular to accentuate the view during the night, mouth is projected forward : sculptor's prowess because the piece is monoxyl.
