The design of this chair goes far back in time. The first known chairs with the distinctive cross shape date back to the Egyptian era, when graves were found containing this type of curule chairs. The curule chair was the name of an honour seat used by the highest officials in ancient Rome.
After Roman times the curule chair was one of the collecting names for derived later chair forms such as Dante chair, Petrarca chair, Savonarola Chair and the now much used Curule Chair.
