I am selling an impressive patinated bronze sculpture with the title ‘Le Devoir’ (duty) or ‘Cincinnatus’ by Adrien Etienne Gaudez (1845-1902). This is one of his most well-known works. It depicts Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a Roman consul, who lived in ca. 460 BC and came to power two times in 458 and 439 BC. Signed on the base: ‘A. GAUDEZ’ Original cartouche with the inscription: ‘Les DEVOIR par A. Gaudez Hors Concours’ The sculpture is about 46 cm tall, is 16 cm wide at the base and weighs 6.6 kg. The original bronze, which was created in 1870, is now preserved at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dole, France, and was recast in the late 20th century.
