This is one of the most important scientific publication of the Enlightenment Century. Buffon (1707-1788) is especially famous for his Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi which he wrote over 50 years in his cabinet at Montbard first then at Tour Saint-Louis to finish with Petit Fontenet library. The encyclopedia was published in 36 volumes between 1749 and 1789, then 8 other were published after Buffon’s death thanks to Lacépède. He included all the knowledge at the time in “natural sciences”, a broad name gathering fields that today are material sciences, physics, chemistry or technology. It is in this encyclopedia that Buffon notes the morphological similarities between men and monkeys, though he thinks that monkeys do not have thoughts-which differs them from humans.
