Mainline History: The Series 103 locomotives were developed by the Deutsche Bundesbahn in the early 1960s to haul express trains (such as the TEE and Intercity trains) at a higher speed than that which was then possible with the E10 series. This was required as a result of the development of the TEE-network and the introduction of, amongst others, the Rheingold and Rheinpfeil top class trains. Initially a trial series (E03/103.0) of 4 locomotives of this locomotive were manufactured. After extensive trials, the Series 103.1 was built and then taken into service. A version of this Series 103.1 with an extended cab was produced at a later stage. This series of locomotives was originally built for hauling relatively light express trains at a speed of 200 km/h.
