The name Steyr AUG is often used to refer to a specific weapon, and especially the first version, which was a 5.56 × 45mm NATO assault rifle with a striking green frame with built-in viewer. The weapon has been exported to more than twenty countries and is the standard weapon of Australia, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Austria, Ireland and once Malaysia. The Steyr AUG was one of the first bull-pup firearms used in many countries and is often seen as the first successful bull-pup. Also special is that the outer layer of the weapon is fabricated from polymers, something that was quite new for the time when the AUG was released.
