Orologio solare dittico, Paul Phillip Beringer, Norimberga - Legno - circa 1780

Authentic horizontal diptych sundial and fruitwood compass from the Age of Enlightenment. Mid-18th century. Most likely German workmanship. The wire of the sundial is to be replaced as it is partially cut. The compass works and the sundial, after the wire for shadow reading has been replaced, should also work. The 18th century box is in very good condition. It still has its closing hook. The list of European cities with their latitude, also of the period, is legible. The box is marked in fountain pen with the name of the former owner and their location. (Monsieur Huchot, Seine-et-Marne) The object is in well-preserved condition. Paul Philipp Beringer was the brother of David Beringer (1756-1821), with whom he probably worked together. He became a master in 1783 and lived in Zirkelschmiedsgasse. Literature: Frank Liebau (2019), Les fabricants de boussoles de Nuremberg - La précision, une tradition Volume 1 p.23.
