Arthur Waagen (1833-1898) - Scultura, figura marinaio su nave con il titolo "Secours" - 75 cm - Spelter - Fine XIX secolo

Arthur Waagen (1833-1898). A sculpture titled "Secours" or Rescue, depicts a sailor standing on the bow of a ship and throwing a line with anchor, signed "Waagen Scpt" (sculpted by Waagen), this sculpture from the late 19th century is cast in spelter/régule; a white metal alloy. The original patina on this antique work of art has been preserved very well. In fine condition, only the rope is broken at the anchor, but that is not noticeable. Dramatic waves rise under the boat as the sailor sails against the wind. The famous sculptor Arthur Waagen (1833-1898) was born in Lithuania (East Prussians). He lived and worked mainly in Paris, where he won numerous awards and was exhibited a lot. Arthur Waagen was a German sculptor, a member of the 19th-century movement who specialised in the realistic representation of animals. Celebrated in his time because of his orientalist cast bronze sculptures, the artist often painted images related to North African Muslim culture, the iconography of sport hunting and historical or popular cultural themes. He is best known for his depictions of dogs, which often accompany other contextual figures to create small narrative vignettes. An example of this is one of his most popular works: Kabyle au retour de la chasse (1869), a sculpture featuring a Berber tribe member on horseback and surrounded by hunting dogs, which the artist cast several times - one of which is now housed in the Dahesh Museum in New York. Born in 1833 in East Prussians, Waagen travelled to France to pursue his artistic career and set up a studio along the Parisian street of Cours-de-Vincennes. Waagen exhibited regularly in the Paris Salons from 1869 to 1887 and died in 1898.
