Molare e zanna - Dente fossile - Mammuthus Meridionalis
A molar and tusk section from a juvenile specimen of the Southern Mammoth (formerly Southern Elephant) Mammuthus Meridionalis. They are not from the same individual but are likely to be from animals of a similar size. This species may have been the ancestor of the more common Woolly Mammoth, but it lived around 2 million years earlier and was much larger. I am including a photo I took in the Paris Natural History Museum showing the size relation between the skeletons of the two animals. The molar is quite different to that of a woolly mammoth- it has less ridges and they are much wider.
Tusk section- 1380 g. 20 x 9.5 x 8 cm
Molar- 1760 g. 20 x 10.5 x 8 cm.
Both pieces are heavily mineralised and solid, being much older than woolly mammal fossils. They have been treated with a preservative as is usual.
