Fuko Matsumoto 松本楓湖(October 9, 1840 - June 22, 1923) was a Japanese painter from the end of the Edo period to the Taisho period.
Born in Terauchi Village, Kawachi County, Hitachi Province (Terauchi, Inashiki City, Ibaraki Prefecture). His real name is Takatada. He is the first issue, Eiga. His father, Soan, was a Chinese medicine doctor. In 1853, at the age of 14, he left for Edo and became a disciple of Oki Ichiga, the official painter of the Tottori clan. In 1855, after the death of Ichimo, he became a disciple of Emi Satake. After that, he turned to the imperial movement and became known as a pro-emperor painter. In 1864, when the Tenguto Rebellion broke out, he took part in it, was defeated by the shogunate forces, and was temporarily housed in his hometown. After the Meiji Restoration, he studied under Yosai Kikuchi, a historical painter. From then on, he called himself Fenghu. In 1895, he exhibited "Invasion of Mongol" and "Hekiteikan" at the 4th National Industrial Exhibition. In 1898, he participated in the founding of the Japan Art Institute. From the next year he will be a judge. In 1919, he became a member of the Imperial Art Academy. The art school Angado, which he presided over, produced many talented artists such as Imamura Shiko and Hayami Gyoshu.
