It was founded by ancient Greek colonists around the 7th century BC. In antiquity the city was also known as Epidamnos. After the Illyrian Wars with the Roman Republic in 229 BC ended in a decisive defeat for the Illyrians, the city passed to Roman rule. Dyrrachium prospered under Roman rule and was developed as a major military and naval base. In 48 BC the Battle of Dyrrhachium between Julius Caesar and Gnaeus Pompey took place here.
