A remarkable, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) showcasing an exquisite painting on shimmering gold leaf, depicting a vibrant summer flower garden.
The garden bursts with a spectrum of vivid, colourful flowers, including bright white and pink peonies 牡丹 (botan) emerging from a rock outcrop, surrounded by blue 'Morning Glories' 朝顔 (asagao) and orange and white lilies 百合 (yuri) along the sides. Fluttering above are a large black and a small yellow butterfly 蝶 (chô).
The right panels are embellished with a yellow rose 山吹 (yamabuki) and clusters of yellow rapeseed 菜の花 (nanohana), while the left features soft orange thistles 薊 (azami) and 'fringed pinks' 撫子 (nadeshiko), creating a rich tapestry of summertime blooms.
Watercolour and ink on gold leaf. Surrounded by two silk borders, a thin dark brown one and wide brown-golden one. Framed by a black lacquered wood with protective hardware engraved with scrolling foliage.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912).
