【Product details】
This lot presents a set of two Bizen ware flower vases, each crafted by a different respected artist. Bizen ware is one of Japan's most famous and traditional forms of pottery, known for its iron-like hardness, absence of glaze, and distinctive earthen colors that emerge from the kiln effects. Originating from Bizen province, now part of Okayama prefecture, this pottery style has a history of over 1000 years and is celebrated for its natural and rustic aesthetic.
The first vase without a wooden box is a work by Kimura Kenichi of Nanzan Klin, Nanzan Pottery Village in Okayama Prefecture. Born in 1942 in Hyogo Prefecture, Kimura has established a reputation for his dedication to the classic Bizen style.
The second vase, accompanied by an original wooden box, is by Kamura Kodou of Hakkou Kiln. Kamura Kodou was born in 1930 in Sone, Okayama Prefecture, and after studying under Bizen artist Motoji Taeno, he received guidance from the esteemed Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toushuu. In 1981, Kamura established Hakkou Kiln and held his first kiln opening. Since then, he has garnered numerous awards and held several solo exhibitions.
Both artists are esteemed members of various prestigious crafts associations in Japan, reflecting their recognized skill and contribution to the art of Bizen ware.
The vases show signs of wear and patina consistent with their age but remain in good condition, as detailed in the accompanying photographs.
