Bertold Löffler (1874-1960) - "The Swabian Round Table"
Original chromoxylograph of "The Swabian Round Table" (c. 1900) by Bertold Löffler (Austrian, 1874-1960), well knowned printmakers and designer from the Jugendstil movement. This artwork is based on a tale from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" ("The boy's magic horn").
This work was made in the context of tales illustrations based on an early 19th century collection of German folk poems and songs, edited by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano. This compendium later served as inspiration for the works of renowned composers, such as Schubert, Brahms and Schoenberg.
The composer Gustav Mahler, in particular, named this collection among his favorite books and adapted its poems into music throughout much of his life.
