XVIII-XIX centuries Nevyansk was the center of icon painting in the Urals. The Nevyansk icon is the pinnacle of Ural mining and Old Believer icon painting
Nevyansk icons of the 18th - early 20th centuries are original examples of the Ural school of icon painting, which formed around Nevyansk, the estate of the industrialists Demidovs, who patronized Old Believers of various professions. Nevyansk icons continue the traditions of ancient Russian icon painting. At the same time, each of the masters who wrote them brought into them contemporary artistic influences, be it classicism or baroque. Nevyansk icons look very “festive”: the icon painters who worked on them painted exclusively to order, using gold sheets and locally produced mineral paints that do not lose their brightness over time.
