Christian Boltanski - Monument (Odessa), photograph, handsigned

Christian Boltanski (1944-2021). "Monument (Odessa)" Photograph from the 90's signed with black marker by the artist. Mounted in 3D on a background of a digital photograph of one of Boltanski's complete installation from the Odessa Monuments series. Canson paper 160 gr. Christian Boltanski's Odessa Monuments (1989-2003) series explores the themes of loss and death perceived through the prism of memory. These installations commemorate unknown people while raising questions about the veracity of the photographic medium. Boltanski situates his practice between the irony of Pop Art and Fluxus and the pathos that Beuys reinscribed in his manipulated found objects. In 1985, Boltanski worked on the installation He Monuments, focusing on photographs of children as a means of conveying the transience of life and awakening a collective consciousness of the dead. Here, childhood assumes a vanitas role, representing temporality and an irrevocable loss recovered only by memory. These moving works, characteristically displayed in dim light in museums and churches, create an eerie atmosphere and almost religious tone with their altar-shaped design and incandescent light bulbs replacing candles. Although the subjects are anonymous, all the children of Monument (Odessa) are inevitably linked to the Holocaust and evoke thoughts about their unknown fate: Altar of a silent elegy of six million people.
