Created by the renowned artisan Sajii Kiyochino during the Showa period, this hand-carved wooden mask captures the essence of a young, unmarried woman with her eyebrows plucked and redrawn higher on the forehead, and teeth blackened, as was customary during that time. The Ko-omote mask's expression is said to be pure, lovely, and somewhat innocent, reflecting the purity and youthfulness of an unmarried woman through the use of white makeup on the face, high eyebrows, and blackened teeth. The mask bears the artist's signature carved on the inside. Sajii Kiyochino, born in Hyogo Prefecture, was a skilled Noh mask artisan. According to a former student's website, Sajii initially painted Japanese art but turned to sculpture after the death of his eldest son, carving a Buddha statue for his memorial. Despite being largely self-taught, Sajii excelled in crafting Noh masks and Buddhist statues, even gaining international recognition with his masks being selected for international art exhibitions. Sajii continued to teach sculpture at his home and create haiga (haiku-inspired paintings) and Buddhist art until his passing in July 2006 at the age of over 100 years old. Please note that due to its age, the mask shows signs of wear and a few small spots. The accompanying cloth bag and the wooden box lid have light spots overall. Please refer to the photos for the condition of the item. The stand is not included. Dimensions: approx. H 21.2 cm W 13cm D 5 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
