Antico Greco Oinochoe trifoglio smaltato di nero (Senza Prezzo di Riserva)

Ancient Greek Black-glazed Trefoil Oinochoe Circa 4th century BC This very fine black glazed oinochoe features a single handle and a bulbous body which rests on a stepped ring foot. The neck of the vessel culminates in a trefoil lip. The shoulder depicts delicately rendered vertical grooves. The term "oinochoe" finds its roots in ancient Greek, where "oinos" translates to wine, and "cheo" means to pour. Thus, an oinochoe is a vessel designed for pouring wine. These vessels were integral to ancient Greek banquets and symposia. Beyond their utilitarian role in dispensing wine, oinochoai often featured elaborate decorations, reflecting the cultural significance of wine in Greek society. Dimensions: 105mm x 70mm; weight 135g Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-2000 Collections.
