Unzan, born into a family with a storied history—his grandfather being Bungo-no-kami Hanabusa Masafusa, a former retainer of the shogunate—held several prestigious positions, including the 41st head priest of Motoyama Honkokuji Temple in Minobu and later the 78th head priest of Sogenji Temple, adopting the Buddhist name Nichiga. He was also known as Shak Kanryu Joushuin. The scroll ends are made of bone, adding a distinctive touch to the piece.
