Saint-Émilion Grand Cru:
The Saint-Émilion-Grand-Cru AOC covers the same appellation area as that of Saint-Emilion and is located in the Libournais on the right bank of the Dordogne. To carry the grand cru label, the production conditions are stricter than that of the Saint-Emilion AOC: a yield limited to 40 hl / ha and a compulsory 12-month aging.
Saint-Émilion-Grand-Cru covers 4,030 ha of calcareous, clay-loamy and sandy soils. Merlot dominates the blends of this AOC, but Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are also vinified. Saint-Émilion-Grand-Cru produces 150,291 hl of red wines each year.
The classification of grands crus, established in 1855 and revised every 10 years, distinguishes 2 categories of growth: the first classified growths (A and B) and the classified grands crus. The Saint-Émilion-Grand-Cru appellation includes two grands crus A, Château Ausone and Château Cheval Blanc as well as 11 grands crus classés B. The mouth of these wines is full-bodied, fleshy and well-structured, on a fine tannin weave and tight quality. The finish is long, fresh with an aromatic richness of red fruits.
