RARE FIRST EDITION by JEAN-ANTOINE DE BAÏF "LES JEUX" printed in PARIS 1572. Early genuine first edition of one of the most important French poets and writers of the Renaissance. Book in excellent condition and complete, paper with very few defects, solid binding, with richly gilt decorations and titles on the spine. This book includes the following works: - XIX Eclogues (Poems inspired by Ovid and Ariosto) - Tragédie Antigone (Sophocles play) - Comédie Le Brave (Plautus comedy) - Comedie L'Eunuque (Terence comedy) - IX Devis des dieux pris de Lucian Author: Jean-Antoine de Baïf (1532–1589) was a French poet and member of the Pléiade, a group of 16th-century French poets whose principal members were Pierre de Ronsard, Joachim du Bellay and Jean-Antoine de Baïf. Baïf was born in Venice, the natural son of the scholar Lazare de Baïf (1496–1547), who was at that time French ambassador at Venice. Thanks, perhaps, to the surroundings of his childhood, he grew up an enthusiast for the fine arts, and surpassed in zeal all the leaders of the Renaissance in France. Title: Les Ieux de Ian Antoine de Baif. A Monseigneur le Duc d'Alencon (François de France 1554–1584). Published by Lucas Breyer, in Paris MDLXXIII or 1573 [i.e. 1572]. As most often, the printing date of 1572 was changed to 1573 by the addition of a final "I" (as seen in the photos). Description: In-8 (162 x 113 mm), 4 ff., 232 pp. A fine copy in modern brown morocco, spine with 5 nerves, title and gilt panels on spine. Hardcover in excellent condition with solid plates and golden floral motifs. Pages are clean, rare rednesses, french text elegantly printed in italics, with ornate initial letters, arabesque bands and typographic florets.
