The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Village offers up aromas of pear, freshly baked bread, peach and frangipane, framed by a deft touch of youthful reduction. There are some changes afoot at this domaine, as Dancer's son Théo takes an increasing role. An agro-forestry project in the Hautes-Côtes, sadly struck by hail a few days before the 2021 harvest, is underway, combining vineyard development with fruit trees and flowering verges. And in the cellar, Théo has banished all new oak (never an important presence, in any case, at this address), instead preferring to purchase used larger-format barrels from another Chassagne-Montrachet winemaker. Those changes will make themselves felt next year, but in the meantime, the 2020 vintage has turned out very nicely, and most of the wines had actually finished their fermentations by the time of my November 2021 visit—not something to be taken for granted chez Dancer, where natural is allowed to take its time. As the notes attest, admirers of this domaine's textural, concentrated but incisive style will love the 2020s.
