Revised by Sir George Bowen who was paid £172, with contributions by F.C. Penrose at £42. In 1859 Sir George Bowen was paid a further £50. towards a 4th edition, but circumstances prevented its appearance at that time. The Introduction states "The subject of this new Handbook is Classical and Historical Greece..." This edition was published at the time of constant armed conflicts on the border between Greece and Turkey). This is a lovely copy almost unused.
