Servizio per zucchero e panna (3) - Opaline Uranium - Vetro
Incredibly beautiful, well-maintained and complete Danish Strawberry Set with hand-painted flowers, consisting of a strawberry bowl, a sugar bowl and a milk jug in exceptionally good condition!
Made of opaline glass with a faint green colour of uranium oxide, which means that in addition to looking fantastic in the sunlight, it also glows neon green in UV light.
Edge, foot and handle in silver-plated light metal.
It can be polished to be completely shiny, but I think the dark and uniform patina is really beautiful and testifies to the set's age in a classy way.
Strawberry bowl: 15.5 cm high, 19 cm wide
Sugar bowl: 7.5 cm high, 11.5 cm wide
Milk jug: 27 cm high, 12 cm wide
The Danish Art, Antik & Design Ring shows a similar set attributed to Fyens Glasværk (Funen Glassworks) around the year 1900. No artist signature.
No damage at all, however the gold edge on the top rim of the jug is worn off.
***
Uranium glass is greenish or yellow (vaseline glass) and lights up in a nice neon green color in UV light.
It was largely produced from about 1850-1942 by adding uranium oxide or sodium diuranate as a glass dye and usually contains up to a few percent uranium.
Besides colouring the glass green or yellow, the use of uranium makes the glass slightly radioactive. However, it is quite harmless, as the dye is bound inside the glass
