Olfert Dapper (Amsterdam, baptized 6 January 1636 – Amsterdam, buried 29 December 1689) was a Dutch geographer, polyglot and historian. His books about distant lands became world famous in his time. Translations appeared in English, French and German.
Though he apparently never left Amsterdam, Dapper produced several finely illustrated volumes describing travels in Asia, Asia Minor, the Middle East, and Africa. Culled from a variety of accounts, his works were very popular, and are especially noteworthy for their excellent illustrations and maps. Bell 1686 Da; Brunet 28341; Graesse 335; Wilson p. 53
