To the northern Bantu tribes "kilengi" means joy arising through beauty. This book includes superb photographs of art objects from throughout Africa. Christopher Roy includes a masterly introduction to the problems of the presentation of traditional African art. The text explores the function of African art (religion, power, prestige, etc.) as well as 10 specific areas where these pieces originated. Includes many illustrations of artwork and of the places where they came from. Much of the most unusual material is from eastern and southern Africa. A large selection of pieces from the Democratic Republic of Congo is also of special interest. 213 large coloured plates, illustrated introductory essay, maps, appendix, index of 213 works with small illustration & commentary, bibliography.
