The Miraculous Icon of the Virgin Mary, The Golden Apple, Hand Painted Bulgarian Icon. The miraculous icon of the Holy Mother of God, called "Golden Apple", is located in the church "St. Uspenie Bogorodichno" in the town of Asenovgrad, quarter "Gorno Voden". It was painted with tempera paints on board by an unknown artist. She is highly respected among believers and especially by childless husbands. The miracle performed by the Mother of God was described by Ananias Klinis, then abbot of the monastery "St. Cyric and Iulita”. Here is what is written about him in a synaxar (an abridged exposition of the lives of saints or of holidays): on the fifth Saturday of Great Lent, the Orthodox give an akathist praise to the Virgin Mary, commemorating the holy miracle-working icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, called "Blagodatna", which is located in the holy old church in the village of Voden. Through this holy and miraculous icon, the Blessed Mother, begging from Christ, grants us countless, gracious healings of bodily and mental infirmities. Remembrance of the miracle of the barren woman who, being late due to the long journey for the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, could not receive blessed bread and, considering this a bad sign, wept and repented of her barrenness. The priest, hearing the woman's cries and sobs, was very saddened, and when he did not find even a crumb left of the blessed bread, understanding the cause of the woman's grief, confusion seized his soul. And the old man saw an apple left as a gift in front of the holy, miraculous icon "Blessed Mother of God", he took it and gave it to the woman as a blessing, and she, accepting the apple with fervent faith, calmed down. And not long after, the woman found herself difficult. When her child was born, out of faith and gratitude to the Mother of God, she used many means and richly decorated the holy icon, having a golden apple forged and giving it as a memory of the Great Grace. Mention me, all who read and listen to this synaxar, saying of me the sinful Ananias Clenis, may God forgive and have mercy on him”. The miracle described in the synaxar took place on the fifth Saturday of Great Lent in 1765, after reading the entire canon of the Virgin and the akathist of the Friday vespers. From then until today, there is a tradition to decorate the miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary with wreaths of apples, starting from the first Friday of Lent, when the first article of the Akathist of the Virgin is read. They stay there for five weeks and are distributed to barren women at the festival. A special belt of three white threads is also made, which women wear until they conceive and give birth. Legend has it that in 1818 a childless woman spent the night in the temple and the Mother of God appeared to her in a dream. She ordered her at dawn to go outside the temple gate, where a woman with three reels would be waiting for her. To go around the temple and use the threads to weave a belt to wear around her waist until she gives birth. The miracles performed by the Holy Mother of God in front of Her icon "Golden Apple" are numerous. Some are described in lists that are kept in the local museum, and others are preserved through tradition. Local people say that in 1934, the sister of Tsar Boris III, Princess Evdokia, slept in the church and recovered from an illness that had plagued her for a long time. As a sign of gratitude, the monarch presented the temple with marble, with which the floor is covered, and a golden engolpe of the miraculous icon.
