Step back into the elegance of the Edo period with this exquisite calligraphy set, a perfect blend of functionality and beauty, housed in wooden box. The set includes a Ryoshi box, traditionally used to store letter paper, manuscripts, and miscellaneous items, and a Suzuri box, which contains an ink stone and a water dropper, essentials for the art of Japanese calligraphy.

Both the Ryoushibako and the Suzuribako (inkstone box) feature exteriors of rich black lacquer with delicate maki-e artistry depicting chrysanthemum blossoms, symbols of nobility and longevity. The interiors boast a refined Nashiji finish, a testament to the artisan's meticulous skill. Included within the Suzuribako are essential calligraphy tools: an inkstone, water dropper, and tray, inviting the touch of a scholarly hand. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.

The lid of the Suzuribako is adorned with maki-e plum blossoms, a revered emblem of resilience and renewal due to their early bloom amidst the chill of winter.

Despite showing signs of time's passage with some surface wear, small dents, patina, chips in the lacquer, and minor scratches, this set remains a testament to the artistry of Edo craftsmanship. A small crack is noted on one corner of the Suzuribako (as shown in the photographs), with slight imperfections on the wooden box.

Dimensions of Larger Box: approx. H 14.5 cm W 32 cm D 40.5 cm
Dimensions of Suzuribako: approx. H 4.7 cm W 22.5 cm D 24.5 cm
