Mask - Chokwe - Angola
Beautiful Mwana Pwo mask of the Chokwe people living in Angola/Congo.
Ex collection David Malik (UK) and Jan Visser (NL).
Now in my personal Dutch collection.
Material: wood, metal, kaolin, twigs, fiber.
This mask emphasizes youthful, feminin beauty.
Adorned with tattoos, earrings and an elaborate coiffure.
The half-closed eyes placed in large concave sockets are covered with white clay (kaolin).
The eyes, slender nose, elliptical mouth and ears are delicately carved on a face delineated by a softly modeled forehead and concave chin.
The artist carved different tattoos on the mask, as the tattoo on the forehead called cingelyengelye.
This magnificent mask, no doubt, will shine in every collection.
The last photo shows a similar, famous mask on the cover of a book edited by Manuel Jordan.
