Hirano Gogaku [Biography] 1809 (Bunka 6) - 1893 (Meiji 26) Born in Watari Village, Shogunate Territory, Hita District, Bungo Province (currently Hita City). A painter monk in the late Edo period. His name is Gaku, and his character is Gogaku. His titles include Takemura Gaishi, Furutake Sonoshu, and Furutake Roshi. He was born at Shonen-ji Temple and later became an adopted child of Shokuji Temple and took over the temple. From the age of 11, he studied under Confucian scholar Tanso Hirose, and became friends with the people at Tanso's private school, Kangien. When he began to seriously pursue painting in his 30s, he learned from the paintings of Takeda Tanomura, but from around the end of the Edo period, when he entered his 50s, he established his own unique style of painting. The abbreviated images, rather than depicting actual scenery, are also avant-garde. In the first year of the Meiji era, Masayoshi Matsukata, who became the governor of Hita Prefecture, highly praised Gogaku's calligraphy and paintings, which made him well known in the central government. He is highly acclaimed for his knowledge of the Sanzetsu (poetry, calligraphy, and painting), which are the hallmarks of a literary man. The tip of the hanging scroll is wood. The unique landscape paintings are beautiful. condition is good.
