This made them an ideal propaganda tool for Roman Emperors to present themselves and the message they wanted to communicate. They are an important symbol of power and are full of symbolism. Antoninianus Emperor Aurelianus, struck Siscia 270-275 AD. Obverse: MP AVRELIANVS AVG, Bust of Aurelian, radiate, cuirassed, right. Reverse: VICTORIA AVG, Victory, winged, draped, holding diadem with both hands, rising into the air; at her feet, two shields. Ref: RIC V.1# 238 Diameter: ± 21,4 mm Condition: fine condition, signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images. AURELIAN: Roman Emperor from 270-275 AD. His series of military victories reunited the Roman Empire after the barbarian invasions and internal revolts. Aurelian put an end to the debasement of coins, caused by the customary practice of stealing silver for the coin production. The senior public financial official Felicissimus incited the mint workers to revolt (bellum monetariorum). The rebellion spread in the streets, but the revolt was repressed in a bloody battle on the Caelian Hill in Rome. VICTORIA (winged Victory), personification of victory. Victoria was especially worshipped by the army and a major part of Roman society. Many temples were erected in her honour, including one on the Palatine Hill which would house the spoils of war from Roman victories. She was, to the Romans, a symbol of victory over death, ultimately determining who would be successful during war. VICTORIA AVG(VSTI): Dedicated to the Victory of the Emperor.
