In Japanese culture, the pine symbolizes strength, the bamboo represents resilience, and the plum signifies perseverance. Together, they are believed to bring good fortune and long life. The small plates, set against a black lacquer base, are decorated with gold maki-e featuring the shippō pattern (seven treasures). This motif is believed to symbolize continued harmony because of the interconnected circles. The lidded bowl features a black lacquer lid with a raised design of plum blossoms accented with mother-of-pearl inlay. The inside of the lid is vermilion and depicts a maki-e design of Mount Fuji, pine trees, a ship sailing on the sea, and land. Mount Fuji holds special significance as a symbol of Japan and is believed to represent immortality and steadfastness. The exterior of the bowl is decorated with a subtle raised plum blossom design, while the interior is completely vermilion. There are scratches, stains, discoloration, and wear consistent with age.
