Naomi King - Frida

Signed, numbered and dated Offset Lithograph by Dutch-Surinamese artist Naomi King. Frida. 2021. Edition of 110. 50 x 70cm. Multi Design Rough 240 gsm Papyrus. Portrait in black and white of Mexican artist Frida Khalo wearing a crown of flowers, set on a patterned colored background with purple, red, oranges, yellow and greeen. Street-Art style. Original mixed media. The print is brand new and has been stored flat. It will be shipped rolled in a tube with extra protection and insured, which means a slightly higher postage cost. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Naomi King is a Dutch-Surinamese street artist and designer. She is a rising star in the Dutch street art scene, and we are thrilled to witness more of her vibrant creations adorning public spaces. Naomi has been recognized as one of the top 5 Rotterdam street artists to follow and has contributed to the Pow!Wow! Rotterdam yearly street art festival (Now All Caps). Her artistic talent manifested early in life. As per her Surinamese father, Naomi King could 'draw rather than chew chicken.' Growing up as an ardent cartoon enthusiast and comic reader, particularly indulging in the long-running indie comic Elfquest by the American couple Wendy and Richard Pini, Naomi found a profound connection to the interactions among different elf tribes within the comic. This connection led her to immerse herself entirely in the comic's world, to the point of being asked by Belgian publisher Arboris to translate the comic strip into Dutch at the age of thirteen. Years later, when handed an aerosol can during a date, she embraced the opportunity to use the wall as her canvas. Working in the public space felt like the perfect medium of expression for her. "My father always says, 'Your talent is a gift,'" explains King. "And you also give a gift to someone else. Art is for everyone. If I can make other people happy with my brain farts and creations, that's a win-win." Naomi's influences span from art nouveau to '80s cartoons, resulting in a remarkably dynamic style bursting with splashes of color. ABOUT THE ARTWORK: As the focus on the place and importance of women in art grew in recent years, Frida Kahlo has become an icon and one of the most represented and praised female artists. Anyone familiar with her personal and artistic life can understand why. Perhaps it wasn't so obvious at the time that a Mexican artist rooting her work in her country's traditions and indigenous art would become so famous and acclaimed throughout the Western world, resulting in her becoming a leading figure of today women's and queer emancipation. What happens when an image transcends the person and becomes a symbol that each of us can (re)express? We believe it is an essential question when reflecting on this piece. It delves into the interpretation and personal experience of all that Frida Kahlo represents to Naomi and how she decided to visually express that. The act of conveying to the viewer all the emotions and impact that Frida Kahlo had on one's life and how to pass that impression to whoever will be lucky enough to encounter this artwork. There are many reasons why we are in awe of this portrait of Frida by Naomi King and literally can't take our eyes off it. To start with, the juxtaposition and play of the colours, and the background patterns. The delicate black drawing of the face and flowers gives the portrait a retro yet realistic quality and brings a softness that helps the viewer see beyond its usual standards of beauty. In a time where most representations remove Frida's characteristic brow and lip hair, Naomi decided to remain true to that aspect and celebrate a more realistic depiction of what is usually considered Frida's unusual beauty. The choice of the title finally, familiar, focuses on the woman under the myth, bringing her closer to us. The open-hand earrings directed towards the viewer reinforce this feeling of intimacy, proximity, and embrace. We find this artwork to be a highly decorative and energizing piece. We hope it will find a special place in, and bring beauty to your interior, or in the life of someone you want to inspire and emulate. STREET-ART MOVEMENT: Naomi King belongs to the wide and ever growing Street-Art movement that originated in the late 80s graffiti scene and has since been reclaiming public spaces as a platform to emancipate art and make it truly accessible to everyone. Councils and, overall, the public domain have now recognized its power and ability to renew and revive cities, abandoned areas, and spark interest for people to (re)engage with commons. Many festivals, commissions, and dedicated museums now celebrate the diversity of styles coexisting within Street-Art. Some of the most prominent members of this movement include pioneers and precursors Keith Harring, Basquiat, Jacques Villeglé, and the more contemporary Banksy, Obey (Shepard Fairey), Invader, C215, JR, Vhils, Mr. Brainwash, FAKE, Jef Aerosol, Swoon, Speedy Graphito, Cornbread, Futura 2000, Kaws, D*Face, Misstic, Fin DAC, the London Police, 1010, Alexi Diaz, Alias, Alice Pasquini, Axel Void, Blek le rat, Cranio, Super A, Danielle SeeWalker, Hoxxoh, Bortusk Kleer, Arsh Mandrome, Hök, Moabit, TedyZet, Utopia, Jago Oner, Santicri, Kev Munday amongst many, many more.
