Gem Spa is an autobiographical work in which Jean-Michel Basquiat depicted himself as a rendered figure riding a bicycle. Basquiat traditionally used vibrant colours in his work, however this painting is predominantly black. The word 'tar' also features at the bottom of the canvas. Basquiat often expressed that he felt 'black as tar' whilst attending a predominantly white school as a child and continued to feel ostracised for his blackness throughout his artistic career.
