What is somewhat unusual, but not totally uncommon
is that only one napkin has been monogrammed with
the initials G.J.
There could be several reasons for this.
Both families on either side of their daughter or son
would be involved in getting the dowry ready on time,
and if not they would ask the help of the religious sisters or nuns
to finish the embroidery. But even then not everything would be complete.
Or the daughter had not had the time to embroider her future husband's
Christian name to the left of hers, or failing that she would have started with the
first napkin and subsequently had found out that the wedding was off or that her
future husband had been killed in the war as conscription was compulsory.
