These bowls represent distinct styles and techniques, showcasing the rich variety of Japanese ceramic art. The first bowl is a Kinsaiyu 金彩釉 chawan by Kato Keiya. The bowl is marked with Kato's seal and is in excellent condition. Born in 1935 in Aichi Prefecture, Kato Keiya has a distinguished career, receiving numerous awards at the Seto Ceramics Exhibition and Kansai General Art Exhibition. His works have been acquired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the city of Seto for permanent preservation. Next is a kuro-satsuma kiln-transformation chawan by the first Ariyama Chotaro, dating from the early 20th century. While it shows some signs of use, it remains in remarkable condition for its age. This piece features a signature on the bottom by Chotaro, who studied ceramics with the Shimazu family at their Iso Goten kiln and at the Kiyomizu Kiln in Kyoto before founding his own kiln in Taniyama in 1899. Despite many challenges, he produced exceptional works that garnered acclaim as “Chotaro ware.” A third tea bowl is a Zeze-yaki chawan by Oumi Zeze Yoen. In excellent condition, this piece bears the pottery mark of Yoen. Zeze ware has a storied history, linked to Kobori Enshu and Hon’ami Koetsu, and is considered one of the seven kilns of Enshu. Yoen, revived in the Taisho era, continues to produce high-quality tea ceramics. The fourth bowl is marked Hozan and is also in excellent condition. The unique pattern formed by the flowing glaze adds distinctive character to the piece. The final tea bowl is a raku ware chawan named “Uzushio (whirlpool)” by Tohbo Seizan. The founder of Seizan Raku, Tohbo Seizan, devoted over 30 years to ceramic research in Korea. He employed a distinctive technique to naturally reveal colors through oxidation and reduction firing processes in the kiln. This bowl is marked with Seizan’s seal and remains in excellent condition. Please review the photos for the exact condition of these unique tea bowls. Dimension of Whirlpool Chawan: approx.
