The storybook "with Pictures that Spring Up in Model Form" that are among the earliest affordable pop-up books published. Some history on them: The name "Bookano" was a blend of the word "book" and the name "Meccano," which was a popular European building-toy kit. 16 or 17 books were produced between 1929 and 1949 (sources vary on the number). The publisher geared the books to a wide audience by using very thick, cheap paper, inexpensive printing techniques, and low-cost bindings so that the books could be priced cheaply. They were assembled via a cottage-industry plan--cutting out and constructing the pop-ups was a job hired out to women working from home. The materials would be delivered to them and picked up when finished. The pop-ups' claim to fame was that they could be viewed from all angles. These particular books were sent to my uncle from Ireland in the 1930s. Two of them bear inscriptions. Right off the bat, I'll tell you they're pretty battered. Spines are missing, my uncle coloured in most of the black and white pictures (neatly, but still, coloured in!), my sister cut off some of the heads of the pop-up characters (most of the heads remain tucked into the book). Scuffs, rubs, bumps galore. They are tatty, beyond a doubt. But most of the popups work fine and are still in glorious color.
