Giuseppe Baldassarri - Acque Minerali Di Chianciano or Mineral Waters Of Chianciano - 1756

RARE FIRST EDITION on an important geological research on the Tuscan hills and the therapeutic benefits of the waters and spas of Chianciano in the province of Siena by Giuseppe BALDASSARRI (1705-1785). There is also a beautiful and large map of H 245 x W 475 mm or 9.7 by 18.7 inches of the hills of Chianciano Terme. The research analyzes the composition of the minerals present in the area, the geological characteristics of the surroundings of Chianciano, and the benefits of the thermal waters for human health and its therapeutic use such as: cleanse the liver via an increase in the production and excretion of liver bile, cure kidney and urinary tract problems thanks to the calcium-alkaline bicarbonate present in its waters or other useful properties for those with respiratory problems...etc. The research also extends to a historical-archaeological level thanks to the deciphering of ancient finds that testify to the presence first of the Etruscans and then of the Romans who had special baths and sumptuous villas built to exploit the benefits of the spa. Original period binding in parchment, solid and in very good condition, with handwritten title on the spine. Pages are white and clean, with wide untrimmed margins, with very few defects and almost no stains. Beautiful illustrations and drop caps with vignettes. Giuseppe BALDASSARRI (1705-1785) was an Italian naturalist and physician, was also a doctor of medicine who operated a successful practice in Siena. He was president of the Academy of Science of Siena (previously known as the Accademia dei Fisiocritici) and also professor of natural history and botany at the University of Siena. In the 16th century Siena was the Italian city with the largest number of Academies: there were at least thirty of them. This cultural liveliness was above all due to the fact that, unlike other cities such as Florence, Siena did not host a court capable of catalyzing circles of intellectuals around itself who therefore remained independent from political power. The corporatist and aggregative spirit, which already boasted a great tradition in the city, received new impetus with the enthusiasts of the most varied disciplines who gave life to humanistic congregations and academies. Giuseppe BALDASSARRI and the members of the "Accademia dei Fisiocritici" coined for themselves the Greek-derived word "Fisiocritici", that is, scholars and researchers of nature in a critical way. They chose as an emblem the touchstone, which was the means adopted since ancient times to recognize true gold and true silver, and as a motto the Latin verse "veris quod possit vincere falsa", that is, with the truth one can conquer the false. Beautiful work, rare and complete first edition. Title: Delle Acque Minerali Di Chianciano. Relazione di Baldassarri Giuseppe. (Of The Mineral Waters Of Chianciano. Report by Baldassarri Giuseppe). Published in the Agostino Bindi printing house, in Siena, MDCCLVI (1756). Text in Italian. References: Moreni, I, 62; Inghirami I, 64. Description: 1 volume in 4to size: H 260 x W 200 mm or 10.3 by 7.9 inches. Pages [16], 273, [3], 56, with a portrait and view of the thermal baths of Chianciano printed in copper, frontispiece printed in two colors with an intaglio frieze and big folded plate depicting the "View of the land of Chianciano" in the state of Siena. Errata paper bound before the table and not at the end, but present. Paper/illustrations with full original margins, in very good condition, pages are almost free from defects, minor blemishes to be expected with prints of this age (268 years). 6-7 pages partially detached-unplugged, but all present, rare and slight foxing on the first part of text but splendid copy, intact and well printed. The photos are very accurate, so please review carefully. Shipping: via UPS, DHL, National Postal Services, protected, INSURED and fully tracked package. Estimated time for Europe 3-5 working days. Shipping within one working day, you can combine shipping if you purchases several items from us, saving money and time.
