Superb Roman God Lar in bronze from the First century A.D.
Acquired from a Spanish private collection, A.B.M n the 80's.
In ancient Rome, the Lares were revered as household deities, guardians of the home and family. These benevolent spirits were believed to watch over the well-being and prosperity of the household, ensuring its safety and abundance. The word "Lar" is derived from the Etruscan term for "proprietor" or "lord," emphasizing their role as protectors of the family domain.
The Lares were typically depicted as small statuettes placed in household shrines or at the crossroads, symbolizing their connection to both the home and the broader community. Romans honored them with regular offerings, including food, wine, and incense, seeking their favor and protection.
The concept of the Lares extended beyond the household to include public spaces, such as streets and neighborhoods, where communities would collectively venerate these guardian spirits. Over time, the notion of Lares evolved, incorporating various ancestral spirits and local deities.
The worship of the Lares persisted throughout the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, highlighting the importance Romans placed on family and community ties. While there may not be a specific real story about a singular god named Lar, the collective presence of the Lares reflects the spiritual and cultural richness of ancient Roman society.
