Etrusco Terracotta figura di un toro - 14.5 cm
N. 84442557
N. 84442557
A Roman mould-made terracotta oil lamp embellished with a monogrammed cross at its centre. The shoulders seem to have been decorated with a geometric motif. The vessel features a long canal nozzle, a rounded body, and a lug handle extending outwards to the rear. The discus is pierced with two filling holes on either side of the cross. This type of oil lamp is known as the Alante Type.
Red terracotta lamps have also been described as slipper lamps because of the shape the lamp creates with handle poking up at the back along with the curvature of the body. Oil lamps made in different ways; either by hand, by wheel, or by mould. Mould became most popular as it could produce multiple lamps i.e. was more efficient. The moulds were made from plaster or clay.
