Nishapur Turquoise Glazed Pottery Jar
Circa 11th–12th century AD
This stonepaste jar features a rounded body with circular recesses, a biconical profile with a stem foot, and a protruding neck. It is monochrome-glazed in turquoise, a colour often associated with the artistic traditions of the region.
Flourishing primarily between the 9th and 14th centuries AD, Nishapur's ceramics were renowned for their exquisite designs and vibrant colors. These ceramics were decorated using various techniques such as slip-painting, underglaze painting, and incising, featuring intricate geometric patterns, floral motifs, and calligraphic scripts. Nishapur's ceramic industry played a significant role in the region's economy and cultural exchange, serving as important commodities traded along the Silk Road.
