Masterful work by the Catalan artist Alexandre de Cabanyes i Marquès (Vilanova i la Geltrú 1877 - 1972)

Biography of the artist

Cabanyes Marquès, Alexandre de. Barcelona, 5.iii.1877 – Villanueva y la Geltrú (Barcelona), 23.iii.1972. Painter.

The son of a family of artists, including his great-uncle, the romantic poet Manuel de Cabanyes, and his father, Lorenzo de Cabanyes y de Olzinelles, also a painter and translator of Molière – Alexandre de Cabanyes was born accidentally in Barcelona, but lived a long life consecrated to art at the family’s neoclassical villa, in the outskirts of Villanueva y la Geltrú, currently converted into a centre of interpretation of romanticism.

A prototypical modernist, he frequented the Cercle artístic de Sant Lluc in Barcelona and the gatherings of Els quatre gats. His first exhibition was in 1900 and in 1901 he moved to Paris, where he spent two years sharing a workshop with Xavier Nogués in the Boulevard Saint Germain. In 1904 he made his first exhibition in the Sala Parés, about which Octavi de Romeu (heteronym of Eugenio d'Ors) said: "Cabanyes is now imposed at the Parès by a powerful artist temperament, by a refined vision of things, by the aristocratic delicacy with which he manages to rhyme a sumptuous colour in wise harmonies."

In 1908 he moved again to Paris and Munich, at the time an important centre of the artistic avant-garde. A great lover of nature, a vital and optimistic man, he stood out as a landscape painter, especially in marine art, in the luminous line of Sorolla, although his portraits are also very appreciable.

In 1927 he was commissioned one of the historical-themed ceilings for the decoration of the Sant Jordi salon at the palace of the Generalitat, in Barcelona. In 1954 he painted three large murals for the dome of the church of the maritime district of Villanueva y la Geltrú.

 Recognized basically as a marine art painter for his famous beach scenes of wide perspective, with stranded boats and sails in the wind, the tones of his palette are always clear and luminous, in the post-impressionist tradition of the Catalan landscape school. He carried out, in total, about forty individual exhibitions. Favourite son of his hometown, he was a member of the patronage of the Balaguer library-museum and the Poblet brotherhood, the Cistercian monastery for whose abbot the portrait had been commissioned.


In 1972 he was granted the Encomienda de Alfonso X el Sabio.
