Taino Zemí wooden idol in caoba wood from the Dominican Republic, dating to the 10th–15th century AD, in excellent condition with a height of 26.5 cm, width of 7 cm and depth of 4 cm, with provenance from a German private collection and includes a CoA.

A Taino Wooden Zemí (Idol) in Caoba wood , Dominican Relublic, 10th to 15th Century A.D.
Fine and well-carved wooden zemí representing a standing ancestral or protective spirit. The figure displays a tall, elaborate headdress with incised geometric motifs, expressive facial features with large circular eyes, and a stylized body with openwork legs and detailed carving. The mahogany wood has developed a beautiful light beige patina with visible grain and natural aging, characteristic of ancient Taino wooden sculpture.
Wooden zemíes of this quality and size are rare survivors and were central to Taino religious practices, used in ceremonies, household altars, or as personal guardians.
